Around 5 months ago I became a new Tech Lead. Excited, curious and a little bit intimidated by the uncertainty of what comes next.

I have always been fascinated by how effective tech teams are led. I’ve been the beneficiary of many great team leads and tech leads, and jumped at the opportunity of experiencing and learning first hand.

I had previously been the lead Front-end engineer of a small startup, but this was my first official assignment as the official leader in charge of a software team.

Reflecting on my journey so far, there have been things that I had anticipated. But there were also a few surprising things that I learned that I didn’t realise beforehand:

  • Meetings can be incredibly effective when used right.
  • It is important to find your way of leadership and lead your way.
  • Finding time to code is really hard.
  • The importance of buy-in and getting others on your side.

1. Meetings Can Be Incredibly Effective
