Who’s your favorite historical figure and why?

Liu Bang - because of his incredible resilience. He started from impoverished beginnings, began his ascent as a common outlaw against the powerful Qin empire, then somehow outsurvived and outlasted a rival who consistently beat him on the battlefield.

Can you judge the past with today’s lens?

Yes and no.

Yes because historical interpretation will always have some dimension of bias and thoughts of the reader, and so it's impossible to avoid seeing the past without the lens of the interpreter's 'today' and that's an important part of what history is.

No, because at the same time I think it's important to try our best to separate the facts from interpretation and be comfortable with the fact that today's judgement may not be absolute.
